Construction work on the Gawler to Daveyston section of the upgrade started in January 2008.
The final alignment for the duplication of the highway, between Gawler and Greenock has been determined. The Minister for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, Mr Patrick Conlon, has approved the alignment.
The alignment was determined following consultation with the community and landowners and after consideration of engineering, environmental and social factors.
Junction Upgrades and Overtaking Lane Extension
Construction of the first stage of the upgrade started in January 2007 and was completed in May 2007. The work included:
- Widening of the Murray Street junction (at Nuriootpa), including lighting, new sheltered right turn lane and extension of the existing left turn lane.
- Realigning of the Belvidere Road junction to improve sight distance, including lighting, new sheltered right turn lane and extension of the existing left turn lane.
- Extension of the existing overtaking lane adjacent to Moppa Road with relocated lighting at the Old Kapunda Road and Moppa Road junctions. The overtaking lane was extended for a length of 700m on the southern side of the highway to meet with the Old Kapunda Road junction.
Daveyston to Greenock Section
Construction work on the duplication of the Sturt Highway, between Daveyston and Greenock is complete. Work included:
- duplication to the south of the current road in the vicinity of Daveyston. Between Hempel Road and Bartels Road the duplication will be built either side of the current lanes, meeting with the existing highway at Bartels Road
- duplication of the Hempel Road overpass, south of the existing structure
- a seven metre wide central median with wire rope safety fence.

- eight hectares of vegetation planted.
Daveyston - Greenock Section Completed
Typical cross sections for landscaping have been developed for this section of the upgrade.
Gawler Interchange Duplication
Construction started in January 2008.
Duplication of the highway through the Gawler Interchange to the Scott Road junction and a new interchange bridge includes:
- construction of a two lane bridge over Main North Road, north of the existing bridge
- rearrangement of the access ramps, include:

- realignment of the east-bound left turn slip lane from Sturt Highway onto Main North Road
- right turn facility from the east-bound slip lane onto Main North Road
- right turn facility for west-bound vehicles from Main North Road onto the Sturt Highway
- duplication to the south of the existing highway from the Gawler Interchange to Scott Road, with a central median
- revegetation of the road verges and surrounds.

Construction of this section started in January 2008.
Features of this section include:
- duplication of 17 kilometres of highway between Scott Road at Kingsford to Daveyston Road at Daveyston
- 15 metre wide central median
- revegetation using native species
- new minor truck rest area
- median openings at the junctions of the Sturt Highway with:

- Lienert Road and Wandel Road (stagged T-junction)
- Les Dunkley Road and Nurse Road - this will have a 30 metre wide median to allow storage of B-doubles
Road and Traffic Restrictions
The highway will remain open to traffic throughout the upgrade. However, some lane and speed restrictions will be in place.
Speed restrictions will be in place along the highway, and motorists are asked to take extra care when workers are on site.
Advanced roadwork signs are being used to alert motorists to speed and lane restrictions.
Construction work will generally occur between 7.00 am and 5.00 pm, Monday to Saturday.
While workers are on site speed restrictions of 60km/hour, 40km/hour and 25km/hour may be in place
