Oct 2008 Survey Results

On 22 October 2007 surveys were distributed to households, businesses and community groups within the locality of the project. The aim was to gain an understanding of community interest in aspects of the proposed tram overpass. This survey was also available online and we encouraged any interested party to complete the survey via advertisements in the local Messenger press, at tram stops and onboard trams.

Over 300 responses were received from the community. Some of the key findings are listed below.

  • Respondents living adjacent to the tram line expressed interest in the visual impact of the overpass.
  • The majority of all respondents were keen to preserve as many trees as possible. Those living in Black Forest specifically wanted to retain the large gums on Aroha Terrace.
  • The possible interruption of tram services during construction was listed as an issue for the majority of respondents.
  • People living in Glandore raised possible access restrictions during and after construction of the tram overpass as an issue.
  • People living in Everard Park raised the possibility of reduced access to their suburb as an issue (particularly on the completion of the South Road/ANZAC Highway Underpass project).
  • Those living outside of the project catchment area were keen on the ‘park and ride’ facilities.
  • Pedestrian access across South Road was an issue raised by all respondents.
  • Possible loss of tram stops was raised as an issue by all respondents.
  • The majority of respondents were not concerned about the noise of the tram, however those adjacent to the tram line wanted to ensure that the level of noise did not increase.
  • There were mixed views regarding the inclusion of public art, an information hub or café/shop.
  • The vast majority of respondents found the idea of greening the area and the provision of landscaping appealing.
