The Northern Expressway Project consists of two components: the Northern Expressway (between Gawler and Port Wakefield Road) and the Port Wakefield Road Upgrade.
Port Wakefield Road is being upgraded at key intersections between its intersection with the Northern Expressway and with the Salisbury Highway, with some service roads created and access restrictions to improve safety.
The upgrade of Port Wakefield Road is required to improve safety and efficiency for the expected increase in traffic from the Northern Expressway. This upgrade is a short to medium term solution and future road options will be investigated.

The key features regarding upgrade of Port Wakefield Road are:
Construction consortium BMDe*3 was awarded the contract to upgrade Port Wakefield Road and commenced works during February 2008.
An Australian company with nationwide construction experience, BMD joined with local firm, e*3, to deliver the Port Wakefield upgrade.
A successful contractor for the next stage of the Northern Expressway (Taylors Road–Gawler) has been awarded to York Civil and Fulton Hogan.

Speed restrictions have been lifted on Port Wakefield Road in time for the busy holiday period with the $30 million upgrade now effectively complete.
Motorists can now enjoy free flow traffic along the 12 kilometre corridor that has been upgraded over the past six months.
The upgraded road has greater capacity, with extra lanes, new and upgraded traffic signals.
With the main road corridor now once again taking traffic at the designated 90 kph speed limit only minor adjustments are now required on site. These will take place in January at inter-peak times.
Final landscaping will be carried out after the summer heat has passed.
The $30 million upgrade of Port Wakefield Road will improve road safety and efficiency ahead of the anticipated traffic volume increase for the Northern Expressway and includes:
DTEI thanks motorists for their patience during the life of this project.
Tree removal and pruning has occurred within the immediate vicinity of works along Port Wakefield Road. The tree removal has allowed for intersection upgrades and road widening activities that will help to improve road safety. Some of the cut logs will be relocated to nearby parks or wetlands to provide habitat for fauna species.
The department is developing a landscaping scheme to compensate for tree removals and improve the look of the road corridor – in collaboration with the City of Salisbury. Landscaping will consist of a mix of direct seeding, dryland grassing and mulched planting beds in the median strip. Species to be used include:
The species selected aims for visually appealing plants that are consistent with sustainability and water management principles. The landscaping will be installed in autumn/winter 2009 when construction work has been completed and weather conditions are suitable for plant establishment.
