Community Open Day
December 7th 2008 saw the Northern Expressway site open up to the local community. From 10am to 2pm members of the public were invited to visit the Community Room to learn more about the project, view a drive-through animation and talk to project team members. Visitors were also given a unique opportunity to tour the construction site on guided bus tours. The site tour travelled along the alignment and to get up close to the construction works. The tour allowed people to get a better understanding of the huge scale of the project, see how far works have already progressed and see what is happening off the local road network. For younger visitors there were also various safety and construction activities as well as a temporary tattoo artist and sausage sizzle for the whole family.
The Open Day was a huge success with over 250 people from the local community in attendance. We anticipate another open day in late 2009.

The Northern Expressway Community Room
The Northern Expressway project team has established a community room at the Curtis Road site office. The community room acts as a class room for school groups with displays and activities about the environment, construction, the on site asphalt plant, community engagement, and employment. School groups can listen to presentations from the project team members on these topics, see and touch samples including plants and asphalt, take part in educational activities and learn about career opportunities in the Civil Construction Industry.
The Community room also provides the ideal space for meetings with local council, emergency services and other stakeholders.
If you would like to know more about the community room please contact the project team on 1300 658 621 or via email at northernexpressway@saugov.sa.gov.au
Construction on the Northern Expressway Underway
On Monday July 28 the Minister marked the start of construction for the Northern Expressway with a “sod turning event”. Fulton Hogan York Joint Venture commenced construction on the 23km expressway standard road starting with the Angle Vale and Curtis Roads interchanges. Motorist can expect some traffic management to be in place at these locations. Construction is expected to be completed by December 2010.

Current works and Road Closures
Fulton Fulton Hogan York Joint Venture commenced construction work for the Northern Expressway on September 1 2008. While the construction team aim to minimise the impact on the local road network there is the need to have some lane and road closures, speed restrictions and traffic management in place. While the traffic management is in place we ask for motorist patience and understanding as any restrictions are in place for your safety and that of the workers. For further details on road works and closures please go to the Northern Expressway interactive map.
Road Closures:
Road closures at the expressway corridor will take effect progressively as the road is constructed. The following roads have been permanently closed where the expressway crosses them:
Argent Road
Hillier Road
Petherton Road
Short Road
Whitelaw Road
Womma Road
Fradd Road
The following roads are expected to be closed in early 2009:

Road Works:
At the intersection of various local roads and the future Northern Expressway, traffic signals have been installed to allow haulage vehicles along the alignment to cross these roads. Two way traffic is being maintained but there will be minor delays associated with the operation of these signals. The signals are only in operation during working hours. These local roads are:
Curtis Road
Angle Vale Road
Two Wells Road
Hillier Road
Initial activity includes haulage of fill materials from the borrow pits on the north side of the Gawler River to the expressway alignment on the opposite side of the river. Construction trucks are utilising Wingate and Hillier Roads for this work in the short term and traffic management is in place to ensure the safe management of all vehicles whist this work continues.
Wingate Road
Wingate From 27 October 2008 Wingate Road between Two Wells Road and Gawler River will be temporarily closed while this section of road is re-constructed and re-aligned. It will be re-opened to traffic in January 2009.
As outlined in the Northern Expressway Environmental Report Supplement the Expressway will generate substantial employment and business opportunities over the course of its construction. The report suggests that there could be direct employment of approximately 2,650 jobs over the life of the project.
To maximise opportunities for local industry to contribute to the construction of the Northern Expressway, expressions of interest are being sought from businesses in the northern area with capabilities in civil construction and other related fields. This information will be passed onto Fulton hogan York Joint Venture for consideration. You can register your interest online through the Industry Capability Network SA (ICNSA).
What is ICNSA?
The Industry Capability Network South Australia (ICNSA) promotes South Australian industry through import replacement and opportunities for participation in major projects. The ICN performs a technical role, providing purchasers with a free sourcing service to identify local suppliers capable of supplying goods and services to meet their project requirements. For more information on ICN go to www.icnsa.org.au
An Environmental Report has been prepared to describe the Northern Expressway proposal and evaluate its potential environmental, social and economic effects.
