Riverbank Promenade overlooking the Torrens Lake
The Riverbank Precinct is one of Adelaide's iconic public spaces, offering panoramic views across the River Torrens, the North Adelaide Parklands, Adelaide Oval and Memorial Drive. The precinct's range of existing uses includes a number which are complementary and which lend themselves to common themes. Riverbank and the surrounding area has an annual visitation rate of approximately 5 million people. Recent developments have been dedicated towards creating new and quality public areas, urban infrastructure and landscaping which has revitalised the arts/entertainment/hospitality area bounded by North Terrace, King William Street, the Morphett Street Bridge and the Torrens Lake.

The Riverbank Masterplan provides a coordinated guide to design development and the staged implementation of future public and private investments in the area. Recently completed project stages in the precinct which respond to the Masterplan's guiding principles include the extensions to the Adelaide Convention Centre, the Riverbank Promenade, Torrens Lake Walk, new entrance and improvements to the Adelaide Festival Theatre environs, the Festival Bridge, the Riverbank Event Space (which hosted sporting and cultural events during the 2007 World Police and Fire Games), and the 'Solar Trees' installation.

By drawing the themes together, the objective is to create from the constituent parts, 'one place' where people want to go, regularly and in numbers to relax, to entertain and be entertained and impressed with all that South Australia has to offer. The challenge is to build on this strong visitor base, the leveraging of existing and new activities, while eliminating or circumventing the non-commercial and public voids.

In partnership with the Adelaide City Council, the Office of Major Projects and Infrastructure continues to pursue appropriate development opportunities in the Precinct and surrounds to optimise the Precinct's potential. This will require strengthening the vision of how the Precinct's current and future built form and public spaces can work to create a vibrant destination. This means attracting more people by creating new opportunities for critical mass, active frontages, views by day and by night, public art, water features, things to do and interact with.
