Tramline Extension Project - Victoria Square to City West

Revitalising the Adelaide CBD

Tram travel within the Adelaide CBD area is free, giving workers, shoppers and tourists a convenient hop-on-hop-off light rail service through the city centre connecting the North Terrace precinct, Rundle Mall, the Central Market and Gouger Street.

This free tram service provides additional economic and tourist opportunities for businesses in the city by linking for up to 18 hours per day the cultural, educational and tourist attractions of North Terrace, the shopping heart of the city (Rundle Mall), the business precinct in and around Victoria Square (including Grote Street), the Central Market and its surrounding restaurants and the southern CBD.

This website outlines the design details and other useful information associated with the tramline extension to City West. It aims to explain why, how and when the tramline has been extended, the location of tram stops and how the tram shares the road with other users.

Background

The existing Glenelg tramline travels 10.8 kilometres from Jetty Road in Glenelg to Victoria Square in Adelaide's central business district (CBD). This service was popular both as a commuter link and as a tourist attraction, but previously it fell short of a number of key passenger destinations, such as the business, cultural and retail precincts in the city, the Adelaide Railway Station and the emerging City West precinct.

Tram or light rail systems are recognised, in many cities around the world, for having better levels of efficiency and environmental performance than other modes of transport. The extension positions Adelaide's public transport service for the future while providing immediate benefits for the community.

The tramline now extends past the Morphett Street Bridge to serve more than 5 000 students and workers at the University of South Australia (UniSA) City West campus. Vitally, it directly links tram commuters from seaside, western and inner suburbs including Glenelg, Plympton, Glandore, Black Forest, Goodwood and Wayville to the Rundle Mall retail centre, Adelaide Convention Centre precinct, Festival Theatre, North Terrace hotels and businesses, Adelaide Railway Station and the expanding City West precinct.

Adding to the reliability, convenience and attractiveness of Adelaide's public transport system, the project also provides a convenient, visible and accessible public transport link for people with disabilities and pram users, as well as free tram travel for workers, shoppers and tourists within the CBD.

The tramline extension project claims North Terrace and King William Street as corridors where priority is given to public transport. It is an essential first step of a vision to integrate tram services into the wider metropolitan public transport network, opening up opportunities for future light rail links to other key destinations.
