The existing railcar depot facilities on North Terrace, Adelaide will be relocated to make way for the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.  The project will provide new railcar maintenance, cleaning and stabling facilities to support the $2 billion investment to revitalise the public transport network.

The State Government’s $2 billion public transport investment over 10 years will transform Adelaide’s network into a vibrant, state-of-the-art and sustainable system providing faster, cleaner, more frequent and efficient services for train, tram and bus commuters.

Rail Revitalisation forms the centrepiece of this investment and includes:
> a major upgrade of all metropolitan rail lines, including concrete re-sleepering
> electrification of over 200 kilometres of railway tracks (including the Noarlunga, Tonsley, Outer Harbor and Gawler lines)
> interchange and station infrastructure upgrades

Other elements of the $2 billion public transport network investment include:
> extension of the tramline to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre
> construction of new light rail links to West Lakes, Semaphore and Port Adelaide
> conversion of existing diesel railcars to electric
> procurement of new electric trams and trains
> introduction of a new integrated ticketing system
> procurement of new buses and improved services

This investment in public transport is consistent with the Strategic Infrastructure Plan for South Australia that was released in 2005. This plan provided a long term, state-wide framework for the planning and delivery of infrastructure in South Australia. It identified the use of public transport as one of four priorities for the development of transport infrastructure and revitalising rail is a key part of achieving this goal.
